Election time!
The Election commission, the Independent body which responsible for conducting the elections in India already swing in action and preparing the final electoral list. They also issue EPIC (Electronic Photo Identity Card) to all the Electors. There are big lapses in the local administration. The process of getting a EPIC is like scaling the Mount Everest. For Example, when Election commission announced the date for applying new Identity card the period was not enough. If you take my case, in our ward we have given time of 5 days to get the new card and most of the periods are weekdays. It is impossible for office goers like me to stand in the big queue. Even though I went to the first day, which allocated for us and the equipments that brought by the administrators malfunctioned. So people have to stranded there and finally a local elector who also an engineer volunteer himself to fix it up. Even there are few complaints about the entries in the Voter Identity card. General complaints about lot of details mention the card didn't match what the voter given. In the high, few days I saw about the news in the local paper about the female voter shock to see the some male portrait in her card. Making the voter identity card for millions is a mammoth task, I agree, but silly mistake like this can be avoided. We have hi-tech infrastructure and enough manpower. But only problem is there are no efficient people to over look the process.
Now I must mention about the people who are not using their voting right properly. The number of people who's not casting their votes is from city and all of them well educated and living in high society. Take the rural places where people are uneducated and they are most suffering person consider to the people in city. But they don't fail in their duty; they are the first in the election booth. Even they don't mind standing in big queue for make use of their rights. For statistics purpose here I should give some figures from last Lok Sabha Election, the total polling percentage is 60.76%. In that Nagapattinam tops the percentage of polling with figure of 71.63%, Perambalur constituency comes next with 70.74%. Guess where is our capital of Tamil Nadu come in that list? It's in the bottom of the list and the figures reads as 45.77%, 49.06% and 47.93% of Madras North, Central and South respectively.
The reason we get from the people about not voting is unacceptable. I accept that it's an individual rights whether vote or not. But we also take account that it's one of our social rights. I had little debate with my friend about the reason why he's opt to boycott the election. He thinks that since he couldn't find a good candidate or party leader who will very clean person and do a lot for his state. Even I agree with him on his view. But I must ask a simple question; Do you think this will change the course of current politics? For the people who argues and validating their point of not casting their votes because they are not happy about the parties, I put few question for them. Are you happy about the city infrastructure like roads, drainage system, electricity supply and water supply? or You are happy about how your taxes spend for developments? Most will say "No!". Then why are we paying taxes? You may experience many powerless night. But you never fail to pay the bill before due date.
You are not getting drop of water in your home pipe, but you never fail to pay your water taxes on time. You may say to them till I get decent service I won't pay any of my taxes. But are you doing it? Why? Because if you fail any of the above you may end up in trouble. But if you say I won't cast my vote for some reason, no problem arises. Few days back I saw article in the paper about choosing if the electors decide that none of the candidates is worth their vote, he can officially register his decision by choosing "No Vote" or "None of the above". If this is possible at least we can spare our time to go to booth and press this button. You are using your rights and even Election commission who spends millions of rupees to conduct the election have smile in their face ;)
